It is not that I have the greatest knowledge of cinema, or keenly follow the things happening around me, world or that I am great at writing blogs…but I always wished I had a space of mine where I could share my thinking, my take on things.
While doing nothing today..out of boredom I surfed the Internet to hear some good Marathi songs..and I stumbled upon this Bhupali, “Ghanshyam Sundara Shri Hara”…I have earlier heard this song lot of times mostly from my mother and love this song but this time when I heard it, I could not stop myself and went ahead to pen down my thoughts about it...
The song does not only sound great but its lyrics, composition, picturisation, emotions would appeal to every person who understands human emotions…The song is from the movie Amar Bhupali, 1951 and is sung by music legends Lata Mangeshkar and Panditrao Nagarkar. The movie was directed by one of the greatest directors the Indian cinema has ever produced...Mr. V. Shantaram. The lyrics of the song are of Shaheer Honaji Bala, on whom the movie itself is based..(yes the movie Amar Bhupali is about the life of Honaji Bala, 1754-1844 ). This song is based on Raag-Bhupali…The moment anyone listens to this song.. the person instantly goes back to the era of Honaji Bala…I immediately started thinking about the lifetime of such a great lyricist and managed to gather some information.
Honaji was a gavli (milkman). Right from childhood, Honaji had an inclination towards art, songs and started making his own songs. His friend Bala Karanjikar used to sing his songs, which were appreciated by villagers. This way Honaji got the name as Honaji-Bala. It is said that Honaji’s mother was not in favour of his son’s friendship with Bala. Although Honaji Bala wrote several songs on the beauty of nature, ballads, mythological songs, his main genre was Lavani songs. Unfortunately, I could not obtain much information on Honaji-Bala, I was mesmerized by this song...So, here I am presenting the lyrics of one of my favourite songs...
